The urban block of the agora

The urban block of the agora formed the core of public life in the Roman city of Dion. It is located in the southern part of the city, next to the main paved street (cardo maximus), on an artificial terrace created in the late Roman period (3rd-4th c. CE).

Next to the main street were public latrines (vespasianae) and commercial shops and workshops. Α staircase led from there to a spacious courtyard, around which luxurious baths -the “Great Thermae”- and the Odeum, a small concert hall used for recitations, musical performances, and possibly meetings of the local council members (decuriones), were built.

To the north extended the Roman agora, the forum, the centre of the city’s political life. It comprised public buildings such as the basilica and the curia (council house), arranged around a large, paved square. Adjacent to it stood a second, smaller bath complex with its entrance on the main street.

To the west stood luxurious residences, known as the “House of Epigenes” and the “House of Eubulus”.
